Your Taxes at work       How the Port invests in our community

Port of Seattle levies a tax in King County that represents two percent of the County’s total tax dollar. In 2008, the levy is 22.5 cents per $1,000 assessed property value, and will collect $75.9 million.

The tax levy dollars support a wide variety of Port of Seattle investments that create a more vital economy, environment and community for the Puget Sound region. For instance, since 1994 the Port has invested approximately $450 million in levy funds in container terminal development at the Seaport. These facilities increase our region’s competitive advantage and are directly responsible for 5,000 local jobs.

As part of our commitment to a cleaner environment, over the past decade the Port has used tax levy dollars to create 11 fish and wildlife habitat areas in Elliott Bay, the Central Waterfront, Harbor Island and the Duwamish River, and we’ve developed 20 shoreline parks in the Seattle harbor area that contribute to environmental mitigation and provide waterfront access for local citizens.

And on the community front, the Port has invested in projects like noise insulation improvements for the Highline School District, where about $13 million in tax levy funds have been used to enhance learning environments for students who attend schools close to Sea-Tac Airport.
